This weekend, in response to the Trump administration’s racist and discriminatory Muslim travel ban, Prime Minister Trudeau tweeted that “To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith.”
The tweet prompted glowing headlines around the world, including the one above from PBS.org stating: “Trudeau says Canada will take refugees banned by the U.S.”
The problem? It’s not true. The Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement means that most asylum seekers traveling from the United States cannot claim refugee status here, and our government’s actual plan is to accept 15,000 FEWER refugees and protected persons in 2017 than it aimed for last year.
This is unacceptable. Send a letter to your MP asking them to denounce the Muslim ban, rescind the Safe Third Country Agreement and welcome more refugees to Canada this year, including those left stranded by Trump’s ban.
